Erb’s Palsy
Erb’s Palsy (Erb’s-Duchenne Paralysis) is defined as a brachial plexus paralysis, secondary to trauma of the upper trunk (C5-C6) of the brachial plexus. Brachial plexus injuries are most commonly seen in newborns and are usually caused by traction and excessive lateral flexion of the head and neck during delivery.
Chiropractic adjustments and Erb’s Palsy: a case study. Hyman CA, Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics. Oct. 1997;2(2) pp. 157-60..
This two-month old female presented with obstetrical brachial plexus injury (Erb’s Palsy). The child had been under the care of several medical pediatricians without resolution. The infant had complete resolution of her condition with no complications or residual impairments under chiropractic care.
Resolution of infantile Erb’s palsy utilizing chiropractic treatment. Harris SL, Wood KW J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1993,16:415-418.
This is the case of a 5-week-old boy with a limp left arm. Clinical diagnosis of Erb-Duchenne Palsy was made. The child received specific chiropractic adjustments to the mid-cervical spine and muscle stimulation therapy with an upper extremity exercise program. Patient’s condition resolved with only a mild “waiter’s tip” deformity within two months.
