Menopause

Menopausal (climacteric) symptoms can include depression, night sweats, hot flashes, back or joint pain, irritability, headaches or fatigue.  Since chiropractic’s inception, women have reported that spinal care helps with dysmenorrhea.

Menopausal symptoms: an osteopathic investigation.  Cleary C and Fox JP.  Complementary Therapies in Medicine, 1994; 2:181-186.

This was a placebo controlled osteopathic study of 30 patients with menopausal symptoms.  There was a significant reduction in menopausal symptoms (depression, hot flashes, back or joint pain, irritability, headaches or fatigue) in the group receiving spinal care.  Also found was that testosterone levels were lowered in the group receiving care.

Cervicothoracic Subluxation and Hot Flashes in a Perimenopausal Subject: A Time-Series Case Report.  Weber M, Masarsky CS Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research Volume 1 No. 2, 1996.

This was a  time-series study of a 55 year old woman with a four year history of hot flashes related to natural perimenopause.  The frequency of hot flashes, based on entries from the patient’s diary and clinical records decline following intervention with cervical and upper thoracic adjusting.  Possible mechanisms and implications for future investigation are discussed.
